Watching Ali Abbasi’s incredible film "The Apprentice" gives a sense of unease. How can someone be so devoid of feelings and morals and, more importantly, how can millions of people vote for such a person to lead a country?
The film never feels dead, it is always moving forward
Ali Abbasi explores all of these aspects in a highly stylized and compelling portrait of a man who has had it all and who craves more. The Apprentice follows Donald Trump through a specific era of his career, from the beginning to the madness that became his huge success in the 1990s, and especially his relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn. First of all, I have to say that this film is BEAUTIFUL, it has style, the vintage grittiness of the 80s/90s is captured so beautifully that every frame is filled with detail and color. The sense of period is certainly well-crafted, as is the music with some well-chosen great pieces that accompany the scenes.
Comparisons to films like Wall Street etc
is very obvious, but Ali manages to make it her own. It’s a portrayal that’s not glamorous and is very disturbing because it’s truly horrifying how someone can be like that. The acting is phenomenal and brilliant, especially Sebastian Stan, who gives a terrifying performance – this is truly the Trump we’ve seen on TV. If there’s one negative thing I can think of about this film, it’s that it probably doesn’t explore many of the film’s relationships in more depth.
Some of the film’s characters feel a little detached from the narrative, but that doesn’t detract from the film’s excellence
